Search Engine Optimization, better known as SEO, is a marketing control focused on growing visibility in the organic, unpaid search engine results.  SEO is required to drive traffic and increase awareness in search engines. It optimizes the online content so that a search engine, such as Google, likes to show it as a top result for searches of a certain subject.

As the use of this term is growing, the amount of self-proclaimed “SEO experts” have too.  These “gurus” are making unrealistic promises by offering guaranteed rankings to make all of your internet marketing dreams come true.  While there truly may be some experts out there, the best way to avoid SEO scammers is to become better educated about the subject. Here are a few of the most common “SEO claims” you should look out for when trying to identify the frauds.

  1. Guaranteed rankings

Most SEO scams center around having a guarantee on having a certain ranking. Such as, “Guaranteed #1 ranking on Google.”  No one can guarantee a top spot on Google’s rankings and you should absolutely avoid any company that offers such a promise.

  1. Free trial services

Some scammers will ask for access to your site and to give them a certain amount of days to see what they can do for you. Never, EVER give your passwords and access to information to anyone who offers you free trials.

  1. Set-up fees

Other than paying for the time it takes to get together the information for the company, there should never be significant setup costs.  Often this is where the scammers will trick you into thinking you are getting a good deal and again making false promises before they magically disappear.

  1. Companies that won’t answer your questions

Ask questions to clearly understand what they can actually do for you.  If a sales rep only tells you about what they can do for you rather than asking questions about your site, intentions and goals is only interested in getting your money.  Many will tell you they have new techniques and trade secrets. That just means that the companies want you to think they know what they’re doing, when they really don’t.

  1. Avoid SEO companies that take ownership of your content

Anything that you are paying for should solely belong to you.  If they don’t include complete ownership in the agreement, the content could be held or even sold to a competitor.

In all, there is no secret to gaining overnight success on getting your business to the top of search engines, but these tips will help you avoid the people who tell you they have mastered the act of SEO.  Rather than focusing on SEO, focus on your business and cater to your clients needs. Playing by the rules and giving your audience what they are looking for will work for itself in growing your business.
